Church to Private Residence - Brilliant Adaptive Reuse

One of my dear friends shared this brilliant architecture and interior design transformation.

From a church to private residence by Zecc Architect. This structure, located in Utrecht, Netherlands, are among several churches left abandoned throughout the city. So why not make it a home, right? In keeping with the original Gothic nature of the building little architectural modifications were made. The architects incorporated pointed arches and rib-vaulted ceilings into the new modern design.

The volume of this space is amazing. Natural light floods the interior spaces limiting the necessity for artificial lighting.

While I'm sure they had to update the acoustical and mechanical elements of the structure to bring up to code, the architects retained the original wood floors, stained glass windows and doors.

This is so divine.

The Salvador Dali Museum

It's only hump day but I'm already thinking about my weekend. A couple of friends and I are planning a trip to the west side to check out the new Salvador Dali Museum. I can't wait.

Look at the beautiful architecture.

Just in case you're not familiar with Salvador Dali's work, here's one of his art pieces I saw at the Tate Modern, London. The "Metamorphosis of Narcissus", 1937 - oil on canvas. Briefly, Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection in the pool. Unable to love any other, the Gods turned him into a flower. There are so many emotions entwined in thing.

I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Designing an Office for J.Crew....

....what a treat that would be and the possibilities.

Did I ever tell you how much I heart J.Crew and their preppiness. Oh yes, the way Jenna pairs her picks. The entire classic and chic style of J.Crew I adore. The way they showcase wearing jeans and khakis with a blazer a cool thing. A sequined skirt with a buttoned-down shirt. Their argyle socks and striped neckties.

Contract Design is on the roster this semester, which entails designing a corporate office for a company. J.Crew was my pick. Why not design a space for a company I most admired. The task won't seem so daunting. Besides up until this point I've only had to focus on residential design. I'm looking forward to what commercial entails besides all the codes.

Research and information gathering was the first step. I needed to see their current digs. As I imagined, their offices would be, a creative haven. Offices loaded with inspiration boards, colorful, natural light, open and products everywhere. I also tried to locate J.Crew's mission statement, which by the way is not shared on their website. The woman behind the email at J.Crew wasn't much help either.

**Request: If anyone out there knows J.Crew's mission statement or where I could obtain this information, please let me know. Coffee's on me :).

A few words came to mind during my brainstorming session: creative, inspiration, open plan, storage (lot's of it), natural light, colors: peach, cream, gold, green, blue, maximize product visibility, etc. etc. All kinds of ideas swarming around in my head.

If you had the opportunity to design a space, what would that space be?

Something Different

Art is one of those subjective forms that either excites us or immediately turns us off. Similar to a space you either love it or you don't. I love the art piece over the table engulfed in melted candle wax drippings. There's something beautiful, mysterious and intriguing about this space.

I'm sure I would feel differently if I was standing in this space looking at the candle wax on floor and thinking who's gonna clean this mess. What do you guys think about this interior space?

Happy Inspirational Friday

Feeling inspired to get organized and add color, here's a nice little treat. Install floating shelves to house magazines or books for a quick reach. Or opt for magazine holders in coordinating colors or prints for additional storage. Add a plant to help keep your indoor air clean. This is a neat set-up that doesn't require a lot of space.

Happy Friday

"Contemporary Living with Antiques" - New Book

Studying art history and history of interior design has really opened my eyes to many things especially period furniture: I've grown to appreciate them. You all know how much I adore my books. Here is the latest member to join my book collection: "Contemporary Living with Antiques".  A beautiful coffee table book that is filled with spaces that are unions of old and new. A timeless collection of period and current. I flipped through the book and inside are these lovely treats.

A House in the Luxembourg Countryside. A combination of neutrals and period pieces throughout the house brings out the contemporary spirit. The owners favored use of natural materials such as natural wood, stone, lime and linen.

Something about this blue bathroom and central blue tub captures me.

I love a chandelier in a bathroom especially if it sits over a tub. It's elegant, romantic and fitting for a quick spa escape.

A farmhouse in West Flanders. A bathroom in tadelakt and oak. Nice and clean. The neutral palette is quite soothing.

An architect's house in Zeeland (The Netherlands). This house boasts custom furniture pieces from JOB Interiors. These chairs are covered in rubber and the x-frame dining table is of oak. Love the light fixture.

Ethnic flavor with collections of African and Asian artifacts. The large fireplace is made of French stone and the coffee table is of Thai origin. The global appeal of this room is sensational. The focal lighting highlights the owners' collections, which is a very ideal way of showing it off.

This room reminds me of Restoration Hardware with its slip-covered sofa and louis chair neatly placed in front of the uncovered window. This room is by far my favorite. I love that window.

I look forward to curling up on the sofa, a hot cup of java and my new book. I treasure my time spent with books. Hopefully, thanks to me and other book-lovers out there, print won't become extinct.

Cheers.....

Have you seen Wood Floors Like This - Check the Details

I think this is the coolest looking wood floor I've ever seen. This installation would just make your interior pop, not to mention a great conversation.

Various forms of wood products are used including oak and teak that are incorporated with steel inserts.

I can imagine the amount of time it would take to install this beauty.
But I think the outcome would be worth the wait, don't you?

Cheers.....
